All systems go for Dinagyang 2008 — Treñas

With five days left before the higlights of the Dinagyang Festival 2008, the city government along with the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) assured their readiness for the big event.

Security measures for Dinagyang '08 in place

Security preparations for the Dinagyang festival is already in place with the deployment of more than 600 personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Dinagyang Food Fest

The committee on kiosk of the Dinagyang 2008 decided to situate the kiosks belonging to fraternities along Iznart Street, City Proper. They will not be situated near the food fest area occupied by members of the Iloilo Hotels Restaurant and Resorts Association (IHRRA) along Delgado Streets.

Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) chair Lee Chuan said the foundation suffered financial setback after sponsorships coming from two telecommunication firms Smart and Globe have reduced. The two companies pledged to give sponsorship of P1,250,000 each.

The committee on kiosks of the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) busted a modus operandi of a kiosk applicant for this year’s food festival. As a result, nine applications were canceled by the committee.

2,000 ‘Dagoy’ dolls now ready for Dinagyang Festival

For the first time in 40 years of staging the Dinagyang Festival, the organizer has decided to come up with a collector’s item in the form of ‘Dagoy’ doll which is the festival’s official mascot.

A quick glance at how Dinagyang started

In 1968, the replica of the Image of Sr. Sto. Nino de Cebu was brought to Iloilo City by Fr. Sulpicio Enderes, OSA, with a delegation of the Confradia de Cebu. The image and party were welcomed at the airport by then Parish Priest of San Jose, Fr. Ambrosio Galindrez, OSA, then Iloilo City Mayor Reinerio Ticao and devotees of Sr. Sto. Nino. The image is still enshrined at the San Jose Parish Church , where the novena in his honor is held every Friday.
