Treñas proposes House inquiry on MIWD woes
Iloilo City Rep. Jerry Treñas is proposing an investigation on the controversy hounding the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) through a congressional inquiry under the House committee on good government and public accountability, which he chairs.
Treñas said Iloilo City deserves good water service which the MIWD failed to deliver for the past several years and is serving only some 20 percent of its water concessionaires despite assistance from the city.
The inquiry will also ask officials of the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) to explain the proposed takeover of the water district and the non-recognition of present members of the MIWD board of directors.
Treñas maintained that Iloilo City mayor has the sole power to appoint members of the board as practiced since the inception of the MIWD.
He observed it is only now that the MIWD management, aggravated by LWUA, is itching to take away the appointing powers of the city mayor when the board and the management are at odds with each other.*PNA
