BACOLOD CITY — The signing of Climate Change Act of 2009 is a positive step that will benefit not only Negros Occ. but also the entire Philippines and the world in general, Negros Forest and Ecological Foundation Inc. (NFEFI) President Paul T. Lizares, said.
In an interview during the recent opening program of the Wildlife Month at the Negros Occ. Multi Purpose Activity Center (NOMPAC), he said activities geared towards environmental protection is getting momentum through government and private initiatives across the country.
He told PIA the state of the province’ wildlife is not very good and is in fact in grave condition.
“We are highlighting it through activities like the Wildlife Month to bring awareness of the fact that wildlife, because of forest destruction in this island, is in dire need of help, assistance and education.”
The help needed he identified are: funding, legislation and volunteers who will help raise the awareness of the people that would protect the animals in the forest.
He also cited the signing of a law that imposes a total log ban in the third district of Negros Occ.
“Those are the kinds of legislation we need imposed not just on the 3rd district but on all districts in Negros Occ.”
Lizares stressed that local actions towards environmental preservation has global effects.
He said poaching and hunting will have a short term benefit for the families of hunters. But in the long term, a better benefit would be protection of the environment instead of destruction.
Legislations, funding for campaign, government and private organization partnerships “ these are the kind of awareness and positive steps that we want to see more of in the years to come.” (PIA-LOL)
