9 Bacolod barangays kick off waste segregation
BACOLOD CITY – In line with the strict implementation of the provisions of Republic Act 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, the city government of Bacolod through Mayor Evelio Leonardia started the campaign on solid waste management, especially waste segregation to nine pilot areas.
The said area is under the Our Lady of Fatima Parish through Fr. Ernie Larida and leaders composed of barangays 25 to 33.
Leonardia said the city government set up a pilot area for the solid waste management campaign to serve as example for other barangays to follow as they prepare for the “no segregation, no collection policy” on April 1 this year.
“The city government's support to the barangays' solid waste management will not only include the provision of dump trucks and personnel but also of material recovery facilities where segregated wastes are collected and stored,” he added.
Councilor Greg Gasataya, Sangguniang Panglungsod committee chairman for environment on the other hand gave an assurance that they will give its all out support, including the supply of a dump truck and personnel to assist them in waste segregation and collection, to ensure the success of the pilot area's solid waste management.
Prior to their implementation yesterday, they already implemented the schedule for collection of compostable and recyclable wastes and conductied a series of meetings with other barangay and purok leaders to disseminate the information.
As part of their policy, days like Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays are scheduled for collection of compostable wastes while Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays are scheduled for recyclable, reusable and residual wastes.
Leonardia reiterated the importance of an effective solid waste management which is not only the responsibility of the city but also the barangays and its constituents.
Section 10 of the law states the "segregation and collection of solid waste shall be conducted at the barangay level specifically for biodegradable, compostable and reusable waste".
“The barangay is also responsible for ensuring a 100% efficiency in collecting garbage from residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural sources”.
The city government is only tasked to collect and manage residual wastes through a sanitary landfill.
