Defective weighing scales seized
To protect the consumers from unscrupulous vendors, the Special Services Unit (SSU) of the city government recently seized weighing scales from 12 vendors at the Iloilo Central Market.
The weighing scales have either no official seal installed by the City Treasurers Office or have broken seals. Weighing scales that have broken seals or no official seals are used to deceive the buyers on the supposed number of kilograms.
In a report submitted Mayor Jerry Treñas, Zellah Gil, community affairs officer IV, identified the owners of the defective weighing scales as Wilyn Mendiola, Linguete Alog; Eduardo Elito, Sidro Ortiz, Ben Heyres, Pablo Aranas, Wilfredo Toledo, Henry Lapu-os, Nening Ilustre, Corazon Billiones and Mary Ann Palilio. The owners were ordered to comply with the regulation ordinance of the city which governs the use of non-defective weighing scales.
The team led by Doris Rodriguez likewise confiscated the weighing scale used by Veron's Store. The confiscation was in relation to City Ordinance No. 399. The SSU had been conducting surprise inspections in the different markets in the city to minimize, if not totally stop, the illegal practice of the vendors.
The group conducts operation in the different sections of the markets like fish, meat, grocery and fruit sections.
