Iloilo LGUs oriented on solid waste mgt mandatory provisions
Local government officials and staff in Iloilo City and province are undergoing a series of orientation and planning writeshops for them to put into action the mandatory provisions and requirements of Republic Act 2000 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
The orientations are facilitated by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to capacitate the mayors, planning and development coordinators, solid waste management Focal Persons, Environment and Natural Resources Officers by providing them technical assistance so that they can comply with the mandatory requirements of the law.
The EMB also invited sectors who are involved in Solid Waste Management efforts for them to render updates and help consolidate issues and monitor compliance.
EMB Regional Director Bienvenido Lipayon said the primary output of the orientations is the compliance of the directives issued by their office especially the submission of a ten-year new, revised or updated Solid Waste Management (SWM) Plan, Safe Closure and Rehabilitation Plan and Updates on implementation of existing SWM plan.
Among the topics for discussion are the salient points of RA 2003, Health Impacts of Improper solid waste management, Successes and Failures on SWM Implementation based on the mandatory provisions, and Alternative Technologies.
The participants will also be writing their Safe Closure and Rehabilitation Plan as well as their 10-year SWM Plan. (PIA 6/ESS)
