Treñas downplays planned transport strike
City Mayor Jerry Treñas downplayed the threat of drivers groups belonging to the Metro Iloilo Transport Federation (MITF) to stage a transport strike to protest the implementation of ordinance 2007-195 which shortened their routes.
Treñas said the city is prepared in case the transport strike happens.
MITF earlier threatened to stage a transport strike in time with the Dinagyang celebration in protest of a newly passed ordinance which shortened the routes of public utility jeepneys from the towns of San Barbara, Leganes, Oton, Pavia and San Miguel.
Treñas said the planned strike especially of the Sta. Barbara jeepneys would not affect the commuters in Iloilo City. The people coming from their respective towns will be the one to suffer inconvenience, he added.
Treñas, however, said while they are protecting the interest of the city they will also hear the pleas of the drivers regarding the implementation of the ordinance.
Earlier, the drivers groups asked the help of their mayors who in turn wrote Mayor Treñas asking for the suspension of the implementation of the ordinance.
Treñas forwarded the request of the mayors to the Sangguniang Panlungsod which unfortunately noted down the item.
