Treñas vows to address water, power supply problems
City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas expressed that he will take measures to address the problem on the shortage of water and power supply in the city during his last term.
Treñas admitted that the two issues are primordial concerns in the city's bid to become a premier city by 2015.
Treñas said addressing the water and power supply problems in the city could bring in more investors. One of the things being considered to address the water problem is the privatization of the installation of water lines of the Metro Iloilo Water District's (MIWD) 26,000 customers.
Treñas is set to meet with Government Corporate Counsel Al Agra on Thursday to discuss the salient points regarding the proposal.
The chief executive said having the installation of water lines privatized will enable the MIWD to center their operation on the water distribution for its entire concessionaires. The MIWD does not only cater to the water needs of city residents but also the city's neighboring municipalities.
Treñas's concern for the water supply in the city is an off-shoot of the recent water shortage suffered by city residents. The MIWD has to resort to water rationing because of the lack of water supply from its source, the Maasin Dam.
For the power supply problem, Treñas is looking forward for the interconnection between Panay Electric Company and the National Power Corporation which is expected on June 26, 2007.
The mayor is hopeful that this will already give a temporary solution to the power supply problem of the city.
He said, if left unresolved, the persistent power problem will shun prospective investors in the city.
