Treñas calls for residents' participation on dengue drive
City Mayor Jerry Treñas has called on the public to cooperate in the campaign against the dreaded dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) which has already claimed the lives of three children in the city.
Treñas said residents should once again implement a clean-up drive in their respective community in order to destroy the breeding grounds of Aedes aegypti mosquito which is the carrier of the DHF.
DHF is an acute infectious viral disease usually affecting children. It is characterized by fever during the initial stage. Persons afflicted with DHF usually suffer headache, pain in the eye, joint pain and muscle pain. It is followed by signs of bleeding.
The chief executive said cleanliness of the surroundings should be maintained not only this rainy season but everyday. At the same time, the awareness of the people on dengue should be increased.
As early as May, the city government has distributed flyers and other reading materials to the different barangay captains warning them of the disease. The resurgence of dengue cases is expected during rainy season. However, there are still barangay officials as well as their residents who simply ignored the warning.
Cleanliness of the surroundings is still the best option to prevent the problem. It does not require big budget and only needs effort, willingness and participation of the community, Treñas said.
All the 180 barangays in the city should participate in the clean-up drive, he added.
