Life is not life without music. We hum tunes to relax or escape from our monotonous life. We make melodies to regulate boredom or express our emotions whether it’s a feeling of joy or sorrow, and even confusion. Music is not limited to playing musical instruments alone. Music is the sound of water from stream, the chirping of the birds, the brushing of the leaves. A musician creates his music from simple sounds of nature to follow the beating of a heart.

Music is also a language that some people use in communicating to a Higher Being. One group that traveled all the way to the Philippines to share their music is the Real Life Christian Church Music Team. The team is a group of Australian musicians with the objective of bringing Christ’s teachings to the youth through music. “We want to connect people to God and with one another. A way of connecting to them is through music…” Although the composers of their music belong to a different generation, the team’s music is soft and pop rock which are a big hit among the  youth. The group is also involved in various activities especially community outreach programs. Last September 20 & 21, 2005, they held a concert for the youth dubbed, “Fire Storm”. “We play slow and pop rock because it is relevant to the youth. They could easily relate to it. And it’s also easier to communicate the gospel through it.”

On a Mission

To live on a foreign land may bring out mixed emotions like loneliness and excitement. For the music team they believe that “Nothing is lonelier than not being able to talk about God. God has touched our lives so much that residing in the Philippines for almost six years…did not make us feel lonely. Rather it has inspired us to do our missionary works to those in need.” And music as their way of calling people towards God, they have already released two albums featuring all their original compositions.

Other than their music, they have also given hope to homeless people during their various visits to orphanages. As they move on to their new destination, they say, “Don’t be afraid of tomorrow. God has made you unique so you can be yourself. And always trust in Him. And make Him the purpose of your life.” In Rick Warren’s book The Purpose Driven Life he says: “Life without a purpose is nothing.” Like the team, what sustains them is their purpose of spreading God’s word.
