Kabankalan City, the cleanest and greenest in the province

The City of Kabankalan was named the greenest and cleanest in the whole province of Negros Occidental by the Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran for the year 2005.

Second place went to Bago City and third is San Carlos City.

“This recognition is very significant  because this is the first time that Kabankalan got the award since it became a city eight years ago,” said Dottie Zayco, wife of Mayor Pedro P. Zayco, Jr., and chair of the Clean and Green Program of the city.

The provincial evaluators who visited Kabankalan for this selection were Dr. Ramon T. Tabat from DepEd., Olive H. Sermelo, PEMO; Ma. Vilma J. Celis, PHO; Ma. Joy R. Madayag, DILG;  Ruby C. Arribas, DENR and Marissa C. Inso, DILG.

The assessment criteria of the evaluators were based on absence of eyesores, public market and food terminals, slaughterhouse, public toilets,  waste segregation at source, efficient and effective garbage collections and disposal, well-maintained green areas and support system.

According to the evaluators, one of the things that impressed them with the city of Kabankalan is the full operation of its composting machines and material recovery facilities. ( Eddie M. Yap)
