Stop the political bickerings—City Council

In the wake of the political turmoil in the country, the Sangguniang Panlungsod unanimously approved a resolution calling for all sectors in the society to respect the rule of law and uphold the Philippine Constitution.

The resolution authored by Councilor Eduardo Peñaredondo said the country is now divided and in “deep political trouble” because of the clamor of some quarters in the society for the President to resign. The resolution was approved in last Wednesday's regular session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

The political turmoil in the country continues even after the move to unseat the President through the impeachment failed. The pro-impeachment solons failed to get 1/3 votes from among the members of the House which could have elevated the impeachment complaint to the Senate. The impeachment complaint alleged that Arroyo cheated in the 2004 elections and her family benefited from illegal gambling.

Peñaredondo said the issue on the impeachment case was already resolved last September 6, 2005 and yet there are still sectors in the society that do not respect the decision of Congress. They even went to the streets to demand the president's resignation.

Peñaredondo's resolution added, these are the trying times where the peso continues to depreciate and the cost of oil and other prime commodities continue to rise. The government debt is also burgeoning. We can not afford to let the entire Filipino nation suffer from poverty, misery and hopelessness by doing acts detrimental to our country.”

The lawyer legislator further said, the political turmoil in the country discourages prospective investors from entering our country thus affecting our economy.
