DILG spearheads regional Clean and Green 2005 search

The national search for Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran (more popularly known as the “Clean and Green”) may have been temporarily stopped, but Western Visayas shall hold its own search for the best environmentally-managed local governments this year.

DILG Regional Director Evelyn A. Trompeta recently convened the GPK's Regional Awards Committee (RAC) to plan out activities for the regional search. The group, spearheaded by the DILG and composed of representatives from Iloilo CODE NGO's, DepEd, DOH, DENR, Presidential Management Staff, the REACT, agreed to continue with the search to maintain the enthusiasm of local governments in managing their environment.

Trompeta recognized that GPK ranks high among the priority programs of governments. Therefore, despite the lack of ready funds for prizes, the RAC came out with a strategy to generate sponsorship for the regional search.

Meanwhile, governors were designated as managers in the provincial search. As such, they shall have the authority to designate the chairperson of the Provincial Awards Committee and orchestrate the GPK evaluation at the provincial level.

The Regional GPK Search will have the following categories: Panlalawigan (6 provinces); Panglunsod (Bacolod City shall pit points with Iloilo City to ensure the program's sustainability); Component City (top three component cities of Negros Occidental, plus Passi City, Iloilo and Roxas City, Capiz); Pambayan Category A for 1 st -3 rd Class Municipalities; 5 municipalities (one nominee per province except Guimaras, which has no qualified entry for this category); Pambayan Category B for 4 th -6 th Class Municipalities: 6 municipalities (one nominee per province; Inland Body of Water Category (River): for Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo and Negros Occidental; and Public Market Restroom for five Component Cities and two HUCs.

The RAC shall evaluate all provincial entries using the standard evaluation instrument of the GPK.

Awarding ceremonies are tentatively set in December this year.
