Rational Insanity

The music of my heart

I have lots of favorite songs. I'm sure you guys out there have a batch of your own. I may just be different from other music lovers in that I am a lyric guy. In other words, I am after the lyrics of the songs over and above their melodies. I tend to go back and sing a certain line of a song again and again because I like what that particular line says. Through the years, I have had so many songs playing in my mind that have played a very special part in my existence. I may be letting you in my personal house of horrors here, but hey, you guys deserve this.

So, this week, I have selected ten beautiful lines from equally beautiful songs I really love. Let's go back to our elementary and baduy song analysis for a change. I noticed though, that most of us, when we sing or listen to songs, we don't really appreciate the lyrics that much because the musical arrangers arrange the lines according to how they are sung. Well, to solve this problem and make you guys appreciate the lyrics better, I have written them down here in the plain sentence form. I hope you love these guys, so here goes:

1. “Although I may not be the man some would think of as handsome, to my heart you carry the key.” – Someone to Watch Over Me, Ella Fitzgerald - This beautiful line from this song is so characteristic of how love can be truly blind – hey! I'm not romantic, try being in love and you will know what I mean.

2. “I cherish the thought of always having you here by my side. Oh, baby, I cherish the joy you keep bringin' in into my life.” – Cherish, Madonna - Aside from the cool mermaid-merman MTV, I really do love this song for how it pop-pized appreciation for a special someone.

3. “A man can tell a thousand lies; I've learned my lesson well. Hope I live to tell the secret I have learned, ‘til then, it will burn inside of me.” – Live to Tell, Madonna – Very true dear Madonna; this is also about how the truth will always find a way out no matter what.

4. “I wish that I was in your arms like a Spanish guitar and you will play me through the night, 'til the dawn.” – Spanish Guitar, Toni Braxton – this one is all about the longing that we get for someone, and the time we want to spend when we do get the chance to have that someone in our arms.

5. “I see your true colors, shining through; I see your true colors, and that's why I love you, so don't be afraid to let them show; your true colors are beautiful like a rainbow.” – True Colors, Cindi Lauper – Napaka-gay mareng Cindi! You see, you can never be truly loved if you are not true with the person who loves you.

6. “There's a light in me that shines brightly; they can try but they can't take that away from me.” – Can't take that away from me, Mariah Carey – the song siren has done it again; the true exact words of someone battling with this cruel world. Do not allow yourself to be corrupted by such a menial world.

7. “I can't remember when you weren't there; when I didn't care fro anyone but you. I swear, we've been through everything there is, can't imagine anything we've missed, can't imagine anything, the two of us can't do.” – Through the Years – Oh, this song says it all, whether it be regarding your barkada, your friends, your loved ones – every time I hear it, I am inevitably moved to tears. Katya!!!!

8. “For every win, someone must fail, but there comes a point when, when we exhale.” – Waiting to exhale, Whitney Houston – Know your limits and when those limits are reached, take a breather…we all need breathers or else we can never go on…

9. “We had a once in a lifetime, one I just couldn't see until it was gone. A second once in a lifetime may be too much to ask, but I swear from now on, if ever you're in my arms again, this time, I'll love you much better.” – If ever you're in my arms again – this one is undeniably about seeking a second chance; while it is true that we never see the value of something until it is gone, we still don't show how we value something while it is still there for us. I'm guilty!!!!!

10. And finally, “And when one of us is gone, one is left alone to carry on. Well, then remembering will have to do, our memories alone will get us through; think about the days of me and you, you and me against the world.” And “…When each day is through, I bring my tired body home and look around for you.” – both from You and me against the world – well, you dissect it, I am sure the meaning is as heart wrenching for you as it was for me…
