Rocking the presidency

Reminiscent of the days before the fall of former Pres. Joseph Estrada, various sectors of the society are now calling for the resignation of Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for lack of trust and confidence following the “jueteng-gate” and the “Hello Garci” scandals.

While the president is busy doing her rounds in and out of the country her political opponents are busy mobilizing and forming movements out to topple her administration.

In fact, initial protests were made by these groups in Metro Manila and some parts of the country. However, with the timely intervention by the government forces the anti-Gloria groups fail to shake the Arroyo administration, up to this time.

But Arroyo and her ilk should not be over confident. Who knows, in the coming days we could hear reports of top military officials, civic grous and the clergy defecting to the opposition. By then we might see again another changing of power by mass action.

It is a must that Arroyo and her ilk should face squarely the controversies hurled against them. They should speak up and not just keep mum, lest the people will believe fully what they hear and see through the media. Apparently, however, a big problem is in store for them if all the allegations are true.

It is just saddening that this is again happening to our country only after a short span of time. The current infighting in our government has affected our economy. Stock exchange again suffered all time lows since the “jueteng gate” and the “Hello Garci” scandals started. This is on top of the continuing rise in the prices of petroleum products, rise in prices of basic commodities, rise in unemployment rate, rising poverty incidence, etc.

With the current political crisis, what's in store for our country in the coming days? Only time could tell.
