City geared up for June 12 as Treñas calls for sobriety

Iloilo City is all set to celebrate the 107 th Independence Day this Sunday, June 12.

“(The) City is all set for Independence Day celebration,” Mayor Jerry Treñas declared during yesterday's press conference with the City Hall Press Corps, as he urged the media and the public to help make the celebration a success. Business and media magnate Rogelio Florete will be making a keynote address on the cooperation between the city government and the private sector.

But he sounded the call in a less festive manner, as he appealed for sobriety amid fears of an ongoing plot to unseat President Arroyo.

“We are all set for the city's Independence Day celebration this June 12 and there is no reason for us to panic. Everything is under control and the Philippine National Police is on top of this.” the mayor added.

Although there are talks of destabilization, Iloilo City is not under such threat, he said.

Everybody is apprehensive of the reported plot against the Arroyo administration which is said to be launched this June 12, the mayor observed.

But this should not affect us in anyway, especially when there are other things to be tackled, which are far more important, like poverty alleviation, he added.

“I am calling for sobriety and I am asking the members of the media to help us tell the people this,” he added.
