Elizabeth Celiz-Glorial
Plus thinking one's way to success

Proud wife as Most Outstanding Couple of Ungka Jaro

For some, success means having graduated from a prestigious school.

But for 61-year-old, mother of seven Elizabeth Celiz-Glorial, success is a matter of having a vision.

Success, for this Outstanding Couple awardee, is not a matter of diplomas or degrees earned, but visualizing the kind of life one wants to achieve.

This belief has won for her an award as one of the Most Outstanding Couples in Ungka, Jaro last September 28, 2004. It was given by the City Social Welfare and Development Office.

Fondly called 'Beth,' she has been a Barangay Health Worker for more than 20 years.

Mr. & Mrs. Glorial are contented parents

Beth grew up in a poor family, where she was youngest among three siblings. Her mother does laundry in order to eke out a living. Her father died before she was born.

Living in a poor household was hard. She was only able to finish elementary.

When it came to a point when their mother could no longer afford to tend to their needs, Beth lived with her aunt. In spite of her situation, she was consoled by the guidance of her aunt and the company of her cousins.

Glorial Family

She was 20 years old when she married Romulo Glorial, a fish vendor. Her aunt gave her money to help start a family. She used this money to venture into a small-sized piggery business.

Although they belonged to the have-nots, Beth considered herself blessed with a supportive husband and industrious children--Rolem, Joebert, Lilibeth, Jonathan, Lani, Erwin and Emily.

Everyday her husband would get home from fish vending with a kilo or ‘ganta' of rice plus some fish for their viand.

On weekends, her children would sell ice candy, the proceeds of which would be their school allowance. This helped a lot since she only had to pay for the school fees of her children.

With her small business, she saved all her earnings which were used to pay for her children's studies.

“I didn't really know exactly how much I saved. All I did was to keep my earnings. So when my children ask, I just have to get it from my ‘small box' where I keep the money.”

Positive Thinking

Despite the hardships, Beth never gave up.

“Positive thinking is what matters,” she would tell herself.

Although she never earned a single degree, she was able to put all her children to school.

Thirty-nine year old Rolem, thirty-seven year old Joebert and thirty-five year old Lilibeth are professional technicians working and residing in Manila.

Jonathan, 33, is a mathematics professor at the West Visayas State University. Lani, 31, is a novitiate at the Carmelite Missionary in Novaliches in Quezon City.
