Treñas mulls local ID system

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas is considering the establishment of a local ID (identification) system here.

He noted that in a meeting of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) in Cebu March 9, the mayors discussed concerns regarding the proposed national ID system.

“The league is very supportive of the ID system, there's no problem with that,” Treñas said noting that a nationwide barangay assembly about its implementation will be conducted March 19.

Treñas stressed the LCP would adopt the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) provisions of Local Government Code (LGC) that “the secretary of barangay should come up with the list of residents”.

He explained that this is to identify who among the locals are permanent residents or transients in the village. Treñas pointed out that it would be then accessible for the constituents to avail of education, health and financial assistance.

“It will be easier for us to provide services,” Treñas said. He added that those who seek for help are being required of barangay clearance since there are some instances that they are not residents of the city.

Treñas cited that Marikina City wherein there is the utilization of a local ID system, the residents are given discounts when they buy from the stores.

“The member cities are now waiting for the uniform proposed ordinance to be implemented,” he said citing that a DILG technical working group is currently studying the approved resolution being endorsed by the LCP.
