Tupas urges MIWD to help guard watershed

Concerned with the dwindling water supply in Iloilo , Governor Niel D. Tupas Sr. urged the Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) management to help guard the Maasin watershed.

The governor noted the diminishing forest cover in the area caused by wanton illegal logging and slash and burn ( kaingin ) employed by some farmers.

Tupas said the provincial government deploys forest guards to watch over the area but additional guards are still needed .

Tupas said the MIWD should also share the responsibility of protecting the Maasin Watershed.

He also called on MIWD officials to spearhead reforestation activities in the area just like what other non-government organizations are doing.

The Maasin dam in Brgy . Daja , Maasin , Iloilo registered its lowest water level since last week causing fears of water shortage among water consumers in the city and neighboring towns.
