'Brgy . Santiago residents favor coal-fired power plant'

Mayor Raul Tupas of Barotac Viejo insists majority of the people in Brgy . Santiago are in favor with the proposed coal-fired power plant by Mirant Global Philippines.

Tupas told The News Today that there is no truth to allegations of those who are against the project that the people were not consulted about it.

He said they have conducted public hearing concerning the proposal and even went into house-to-house campaign in order to let the people understand about the importance of the project.

The mayor said that based on their consultations made almost 95% of the people in Barotac Viejo favors the proposed coal-fired power plant project.  

In fact, he said, officials of Barangays Santiago and Francisco have passed a resolution of support endorsing and accepting the proposed project in their place.

However, Tupas stressed that they are not rushing the start of the project. He   assured that proper procedures especially concerning environmental requirements would be followed and strictly required of the project proponent.

Tupas said he respects the views of the environmental advocates. But he reminded that people should be open-minded in terms of opportunity that comes in their town.

Tupas further said that the Parish Pastoral Council of Barotac Viejo endorses the proposed project.
