Controversions with Phoenix

Sandara's soul

Haler! Things were absolutely different and surprising this week as I discovered a lot of stunning realities of life and fate. After Sandara's letter came out last week I received various text messages in reaction to the sentimental story of the SCQ Korean doll who never cease to enthrall, entertain and touch the lives of millions of Filipinos in her own unique way. My close encounter with her happened after a good friend of mine scheduled our interview at Centennial Hotel courtesy of the ever-prolific and amiable Mr. Mannie Gruenberg two weeks ago. So without further blah blah… here's the story, life and the radiant colors of Sandara hidden behind her sweet innocent smile.

ME & SANDY. A fateful close encounter with the controversial SCQ diva who remains to be a glittering young star to shine with a box office movei, "Bcoz of U", Sandara's Romance and a platinum album.

You know her better from your TV screen as the doll-like young star who spoke English or Tagalog in not-so-good fluency. But she's still the gorgeous, sweet and honest SCQ star who never failed to say “Mahal ko kayo” at the end of every show she appeared or in a Korean soap opera every afternoon wherein she hosts with so much passion. Sandara Park is a 20-year-old Korean lass born on November 12, 1984 in her home country Korea . When she was nine years old her parents Eksou Park , a businessman and Kim Park, a responsible housewife decided to live in the Philippines to look for greener pasture. You may wonder why almost all Filipinos nowadays are dreaming to leave the country for work to escape from our nation's economic turmoil while Sandara's family decided to stay here and look for better opportunities to improve their lives. Well, I don't know the answer but one thing I can be sure of. Love, commitment, and perseverance were the reason of their strong bonding that makes her family capable to face any obstacles in life. Believe me, her family experienced so much misery and problem trying to cope up with the harshness of life in the Philippines but they survived and Sandara survived everything including the trials she encountered in the SCQ finals. Okay, enough of the melodramatic lines! Sandara has one brother and a younger sister whom she takes care especially now that she can give all the comfort she got from her huge salary as an ABS-CBN exclusive contract star. This amiable girl spends her leisure time watching TV, surfing the internet and listening to music. Her favorite music artists spans from pop superstars Britney Spears, Christina   Aguilera, Mariah Carey to our very own songbird diva Regine Velasquez. Patrick Garcia and Assunta de Rossi are Sandara's most adored showbiz entities. In fact, she was known to have a deep admiration for Patrick Garcia after she was included in the SCQ final five with Hero, Melissa, Roxanne and Joross. Well, her fate and destiny started to shine after she tried her luck in the audition for Star Circle Quest of ABS-CBN. Believe me, with Sandara's presence in that reality talent show, millions of Filipinos noticed her frailties to speak fluent English and Tagalog, lousy doll-like acting, etc. but she never gave up her will to survive. In fact, she fought and proved her worth with tearful eyes and letter of honesty to her adoring fans every time the jurors like Boy Abunda or Laurenti Dyogi would intimidate her. She was just plain true to herself and transparently honest, a character that touched the masses' hearts and voted her via text voting as the highest voted SCQ finalist. Though she only settled second after grand questor Hero Angeles but still Sandara's luck radiates much brighter than anybody else when she was offered projects such as advertisements, movies, TV shows (Sandara's Romace, SCQ   Reload, ASAP Fanatic, etc.) and a successful singing career that catapulted her album recently into the platinum sales status. But sometimes fame has its own downside when she was bombarded with negative issues after she decided to have a five-month vacation in Korea to study Masscom. She was rumored to be pregnant (that's a common notion for Filipinos every time an actress plan to go abroad) to Joseph Bitangcol, her fellow SCQ star. But that's not true and absolutely lies according to her. She wanted to study and visit her home country because whether we like it or not she's still a Korean. However, what touches me was when she expressed her deep love for Filipinos who never fails to help her gain her current superstar status. Anyway, let this sweet angelic beauty young star do what her heart desires. After all Sandara is popular and her presence captivated the heart of the sentimental Pinoy masses who develop a deep fondness for Korean telenovelas.

So, to unseal and reveal the radiance of Sandy 's (Her current showbiz nickname) angelic soul here's our sensible and memorable chat… (thanks to my good friend Cheaster Cabasac who took our picture together)

RL: Sandy , can you describe yourself in three words?

Sandy : Well, I'm weird, unique and funny (laughs).

RL: What are the three most important things in your life?

Sandy: My career, my family and of course my future is important for me.

RL: Why are you leaving the country so soon?

Sandy : For now, I want to study Masscom in Korea for five months, visit my relatives, and see my home country again but I promise to return in the Philippines to continue my loveteam with Hero because the Filipinos are very close to my heart. I wouldn't be here without them!

RL: If you didn't become a famous star who would you want to be?

Sandy : An ordinary teenager, student, professional and maybe a plain housewife.

RL: Do you have any dream projects in the showbiz world?

Sandy : I want to try comedy like Maricel Soriano or Ai Ai de las Alas. You know it's nice to change image as much as possible if you're an actress. I want to make more good movies that I can be proud of.

RL: Can you describe Joseph and Hero in two words?

Sandy : Hero is moody and weird while Joseph is gentleman and mabait. We've been close friends for almost two years now even before the SCQ finals because we attended a lot of acting workshops.

RL: What makes you happy and sad?

Sandy : I'm very happy every time I have a mall show with my fans screaming but I'm sad if there are negative rumors about me.

RL: How do you foresee yourself ten years from now?

Sandy : Superstar! (laughs) call me ambitious but I want to become the next Nora Aunor because I know if I try my best my dream will come true.

RL: What makes the Philippines and Korea both special to you?

Sandy: My heart is here in the Philippines because ever since I came here nine years ago my luck has been brighter than I've expected and the Filipinos loved me for who I am but in Korea I'm just a normal person like you.

RL: Can you say your favorite Korean and Tagalog expressions as an ending to our chat?

Sandy : No, I don't have Korean expression but I usually shout “AHHH!” when I'm acting funny or “PAA!” if I'm in my wacky mood.

Whew! What a nice conversation with the ever-lovely Sandara Park . I wish that you'll reach the highest star of your dreams and remain humble amid the fame you achieve. Next week Nadine Samonte of Starstruck Batch 1 will mesmerize you here in “Controversions” so don't miss it.
