Gold Medalist ANS Science team to represent WV in National Science Fair

The Antique National School Science Team that won First Place in the Regional Science Fair held last year, Dec. 7-8, 2004 in Iloilo City , will again represent Region VI in the Intel National Science Fair in U.P. Diliman, Quezon City on February 15 - 17, 2005 . The team is composed of 4th year students Aris Kendell Bungabong, Chery Ann Naig, Diana Ocela, and Dale Orquia.

Team adviser Mr. Miguel Calibjo, who also won 2nd place in the most outstanding adviser category in the regional fair and team leader Aris Fendell Bungabong will represent the team in the national forum.

The science fair is sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology , , Intel Philippines and the Department of Education.

The award winning research project is a biodegradable plastic with an additive from Cadena de Amor (Antigonan leptopus H.). It was subjected to a battery of tests such as flammability, tensile stress, soil biodegradability, organic solvency and the effects of water. The weakness of the plastic is that it is soluble in water since the researchers used a polyvinyl alcohol binder that is water soluble.

The team went through a pre-judging process and interviewed by a panel of judges before they presented the project in a science congress in public where it was subjected to a set of criteria in the regional fair.
