Without the White Coat

BIOMEDIS, Inc… stories that heal

It all started February 2003 when a Filipino-run pharmaceutical company brought in Dr. Hunter “PATCH” Adams ( physician/doctor extraordinaire, Gesundheit Institute, Virginia) hoping to change the direction of medical practice and care in this country, an advocacy that would bring compassion and humanity back to the practice of MEDICINE.

As time goes by the relationship between the patient and the physician has withered, thus the latter is now prone to malpractice suit or legal litigation by his patient. From the time the medical student started his medical proper education he learns the basic knowledge of life, the process how life came to be, how disease came to be and their treatment, he has reviewed all the organ systems of the body, how they work and how to address and treat the illness that it carries. Early in medical school we were trained to view the sick human being as an organ system or just a disease entity, but we were never taught by our professors or mentors to address our patients as a total human being (Holistic Medicine), thus it brought and had inculcated in our minds as learners of medicine to be faceless, blunt, tactless, and uncaring individuals… a barrier was placed between the physician and his patient, the doctor can never have his emotions known to the patient since he is viewed by them as person in a pedestal standing one or two levels above his patient a sort of a “demi-god” in his patient's view.

Medical students today are taught and shown the typical practice of medicine as long lines outside a doctor's office in which patients are seen as just plain numbers or symptoms… a fast food chain operation. As early as this the medical student had been taught that the person behind the desk is the giver and saver of life, but as teachers of medicine we never had taught the most important aspect of medical practice, the compassion and humility as a loving and caring physician. We tend to forget that healing the sick person comes into being as a good communication between the patient and his doctor. The openness of the physician to his patient, a time that the physician had step down on the same level with his patient, now he cries with his patient… an interaction with his patients then that's where life starts between his patient and him, he can hug his patient a closeness and being sympathetic to his patient.

From the experiences from our patient encounters and those that had greatly played a big role in the physician's practice, or just a joyful sharing of emotions and love with our patients can now set some examples for others written in the form of stories that in the future can be shared with everyone, especially those pursuing the medical field, showing them a product of a caring and loving physician. For the learners of medicine we will show and teach them the human aspect of medicine… that caring and loving counts a lot. Stories that will serve as examples in our lives, and stories that would redirect and redefine our lives as a “special” kind of doctor… a person and a human being that will eventually bring life back to the practice of MEDICINE.
