Labor exec notes lack of jobs in the country

Many Filipinos will continue to go abroad to seek employment as long as there are lesser job opportunities here in the country, said Labor Attaché Lamberto Marin.

“Some go abroad because the present economic conditions in our country can no longer offer jobs. Employment opportunities are limited,” Marin explained.

Marin was in Iloilo City to grace the Dinagyang Jobs Fair 2005 held recently.

Marin added, “ others go abroad because overseas employment offer better salaries and benefits.”

“Others go abroad to chase a dream that one day he will build a beautiful house, secure the future of his family and improve his quality of life,” Marin said.

Marin explained that employment is always a decision that requires informed evaluation and determined planning.

“The first reality that confronts us is that the economic situation in our country compels us to send our workers overseas,” Marin cited.

Marin even advised those who planned to work abroad that “you begin your overseas journey with the acquisition of relevant information, skill and attitude”.

“These are the basic tools you need if you are about to leave as an empowered OFW,” he said.

He noted that for an OFW not be exploited, one must understand his rights and privileges as well as his duties and responsibilities.

Marin also pointed out that ignorance of the recruitment agency and Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) procedures, contract provisions and grievance mechanism may subject an OFW to harsh realities like excessive deductions and other salary related problems.

This, he said, often leads to breach and pre-termination of employment contract.
