DILG bares region's nominees for national GPK


Five local governments and a river now have the chance to represent Western Visayas in the national search for the Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran (GPK). The national winners shall be formally announced and awarded during the 2004 Presidential Local Government Awards in Malacanang at a date to be approved by the President.

The nominees are also the topnotchers last year's regional evaluation. They are: Iloilo Province (Provincial Category); Iloilo City (Highly Urbanized City Category); Roxas City (Component City Category), Calinog , Iloilo (1 st –3 rd Class Municipality Category); Banga , Aklan (4 th -6 th Class Municipality Category); and Bugang River, Pandan , Antique (Inland Body of Water Category).

The National winners shall receive trophies and cash awards from the President's Social Fund. Due to the government's observance of austerity measures, cash awards were pro-rated among the winners, as follows: for LGUs : P500 ,000 for the national awardee; P150,000 for the first runner up; and P100,000 for the second runner up. For the Inland Bodies of Water (which includes lakes and rivers): P125 ,000 for the national awardee; P75,000 for the first runner up; and P50,000 for the second runner up.

“We are optimistic and hopeful that Region VI shall again be recognized in various categories as we did the conduct of the search,” said DILG OIC Regional Director Evelyn A. Trompeta . “We hope that this year would again prove fruitful in maintaining our image as one of the cleanest and greenest regions of the country.”
