Watermelon, rice production better last year

By Leny G. Gabo

Favored by good weather, production of watermelons and rice in the province of Iloilo was better compared with the previous year.

Provincial Agriculturist Inocencio Parian farmers in the province posted a high production of watermelons totaling almost 145 million kilos.

He said the increased production earned the farmers almost P700 million in profits.

Parian said there was also a good production of banana last year. He noted that despite the attack of ‘bunchy top' disease in bananas, production still reached about 19.7 million kilos.

Parian cited the extensive trainings conducted on farmers of the province as the reason for last year's good agricultural production.

Parian earlier said that his office has conducted various trainings to farmers in order to enhance their skills in farming methods. He noted the two young farmers who are set to fly to Japan in April this year, for a training-program.

This year, Parian expects that the agriculture sector in the province will be more productive. He said that they have done their part in achieving better last year and he expects to double the achievements this year, making the province as the food basket of the country. He added that this year, they expect that Iloilo province would be on the top list as the rice producer of the country.
