New contractor takes over new IRC project

By Leny G. Gabo

Iloilo-based F. Gurrea Construction would soon take over the construction of the new Iloilo Rehabilitation Center (IRC) in Brgy. Nanga, Pototan, Iloilo after the completion of the necessary inventories conducted by the Provincial Engineers Office.

F. Gurrea Construction is the third lowest bidder of the project.

Gov. Niel Tupas Sr. did not renew the contract with contractor Great Asian Development Inc. after it incurred remarkable slippage and delay in the construction of the project.

The contract for Great Asian Development Inc. lapsed on December 17, 2004 . It asked the provincial government an extension of another one month but Tupas did not grant their request.

Tupas said he is not satisfied with the performance of the said contractor.

The fifteen-hectare prison facility would soon house the more than 600 prisoners currently detained at the old Iloilo Rehabilitation Center (IRC) located at the back of the Iloilo Provincial Capitol.

Construction of the said project started in the month of May last year with the initial 15 million pesos released by Senate President Franklin Drilon.

The News Today learned that the planned construction of a new IRC has long been overdue, the present one being dilapidated and already very crowded.

With the assumption of a new contractor, the governor is hopeful that the project would now be on the right track.
