By Jeehan V. Fernandez

The Ramon Q. Avanceña Hall of Justice in Bonifacio Drive , Iloilo City will soon house a 6-sala Annex Building to improve the course of justice system in this part of the country.

Department of Justice (DOJ) secretary Raul Gonzalez, Sr. in a simple ground-breaking ceremony yesterday, launched the proposed construction of the building, the budget of which is taken from the DOJ's fund for various halls of justice in the country.

Gonzalez said the project will start immediately after the bidding process and is expected to be completed in six months time.

“ Iloilo City deserves more salas than the present,” Gonzalez stressed. He noted the bill for the realization of the building was filed during his second term as Congressman of the city's Lone District.

Gonzalez cited the Annex Building will give improvement as to the pace of the justice system especially those with regards to criminal cases. He added, there has been a heavy backlog of cases numbering to about 1,500 in each Municipal Trial Court (MTC).

Meanwhile, Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said this is a welcome development to the city as the new building will serve an additional venue for litigation to the current four salas. He added that majority of the cases are filed by parties from Iloilo City .
